Are you a first-time mover? If so, you may be feeling a lot of mixed emotions, from excitement to sadness! While moving can often be bittersweet, it can also be a stressful experience if it is not planned out correctly. What many people may not realize who have not moved before is that the entire process should be started weeks, and potentially even a few months, before your actual moving date! So, what exactly needs to be done to prepare for a move? Here are some of the most important things to think about and plan before you make the big move:
- Choose your moving company. When you make the decision to move, it is important to stay ahead of the game and choose your moving company promptly and with enough time to ensure that everything is set and prepared for the big day. Try to allow 4-6 weeks before your move for the moving company to be able to come to your house and prepare for how everything will be shipped, packed, loaded and delivered. It is also good to set delivery dates in stone so that you know exactly when all your belongings will arrive.
- Start packing early. Although everyone dreads it, begin packing as early as possible! This includes making sure that you have all the necessary materials to pack in an organized fashion, including boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap for fragile items and markers to label boxes. It is essential that everything is labeled so that you can remember which of your belongings are in what box! If packing becomes overwhelming for you, try to set small goals for yourself each day and focus on one room at a time – making you feel more accomplished while getting it done!
- Reach out to necessary people for you address change. Once you know what your new address will be, make a list of all the necessary people that you will need to reach out to for your new address. This includes the post office, medical records, banks, or credit card companies. If you have children, it is important to remember to notify the school system as well, so they will know of the change.
